Is the world out of control? Perhaps it’s just me but I feel like the world is spinning so fast that parts are flying off. It’s like that playground spinning wheel where some kids get on and others start pushing, spinning the wheel faster and faster. Eventually the kids would start flying off.
With headlines this week like “Swedish navy returns to vast underground HQ amid Russia fears” and “Japan to hire guards for contested islands also claimed by China” and “Putin could decide for the world on CRISPR babies”, it just seems like things are out of control.
Nevertheless, no matter the state of the world’s affairs, we, as followers of Jesus, have nothing to fear because there’s nothing in this world that is ours. And we have this passage of God’s Word to rest on: Philippians 2:8-11 (ESV), “And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.“
There is an old song Twila Paris wrote and sang called “God is in Control.” Here’s the first verse and chorus.
This is no time for fear
This is a time for faith and determination
Don’t lose the vision here
Carried away by the motion
Hold on to all that you hide in your heart
There is one thing that has always been true
It holds the world together
God is in control
We believe that His children will not be forsaken
God is in control
We will choose to remember and never be shaken
There is no power above or beside Him, we know, oh
God is in control, oh God is in control
